Children from the Genesee Country Christian School celebrated Fire Safety Month with the help of volunteer firefighters from the Groveland Volunteer Fire Department.
For the 2 day per week, 3 year old class, firefighters Steve Cockerham (a Captain and affectionatley known as “Pastor” around the fire house) and Bill Lisner (the Assistant Chief) visited their Genesee Country Christian School classroom. “Fireman Bill” was fully dressed in his gear, along with his oxygen mask and tank to help the children understand , in the event of an emergency, that they may see and hear a fireman and that they may look scary, but they are there to help and protect you. The 3 year olds were very excited and active and even showed the fireman how to “Stop, Drop and Roll” . While waiting for the fireman, teachers, Belinda Murphy and Desiree Weldy, had the children do a “Stop, Drop and Roll” craft project and it was fresh and their minds and they were excited to share it.
The 3 day per week class, the 4 year olds, got to visit the Groveland Volunteer Fire Department, along with the teachers and many moms, dads, grandmas and grandpas. They were given a tour, had a small “class” on fire safety, and again Assistant Chief Bill, dressed in his complete outfit and crawled around on the floor to show the kids what it may look like in an emergency. At the fire hall, another firefighter Matt Thompson and Lieutenant Shane Sweazy were there to help and answer questions as well.
The main objective the firefighters wanted to instill in the kids is “to not be afraid, if in the event of a fire, a fireman has all his gear on and comes to your house.” But according to Fireman Steve, “We hope to never meet you at your house.”
The kids even got to share “snack and sharing time” at the Fire House. Thanks to a very clever mom who brought fire truck cookies for snack !
Please remember …… changing your clocks this weekend ……change your batteries in your smoke detectors. And thank a volunteer firefighter for their service.
