Local Cold War Vets Now Have Permanent Real Property Tax Exemption

LIVINGSTON COUNTY – Livingston County’s Cold War veterans now have a permanent real property tax exemption.

A press release from Livingston County announced that the law originally had a 10-year ‘rolling’ time limit. Since it was passed in 2008, the first exemptions were set to expire in 2019. The amendment eliminates that time limit and makes the exemption permanent.

The Amendment reads as follows:

Section 1 of Local Law No. 6 of the year 2008 is amended by adding a subparagraph as follows:

a. Pursuant to subsection 2(c)(iii) of §458-b of the NYS Real Property Tax Law, the exemption authorized shall
apply to qualifying owners of qualifying real property for as long as they remain qualifying owners, without regard
to such ten year limitation.

Section 2:

This Local Law shall take effect immediately upon its filing with the Secretary of State and shall be applicable to
all assessment rolls prepared pursuant.

An amendment to Local Law No. 6 of the Year 2008 entitled ‘Providing Cold War Veterans’ Exemption pursuant to section 458-b of the Real Property Tax Law’ was officially filed by the Department of State on Dec. 29, 2017.
