AVON — Workers at Gray Metal are trying to form a union in an attempt to increase wages and benefits for the workers.
Local sheet Metal Workers 46 International Association is protesting outside of Gray Metal and driving around with a large sign on a trailer telling the community of their intent.
“We are helping to assist workers to enjoy the American dream,” said Chris Hollfelder a representative from the Local 46. “All we are doing is looking for a way for workers to negotiate a fair wage.”
According to Hollfelder employees presented senior management with their cards as a desire to vote, the company then denied authorization of the bargaining unit.
Hollfelder was adamate that they are trying to form an association and not a union.
Federal law requires a minimum of 30 percent of the workers to call a vote and Hollfelder stated they have around 50 percent of the workers support.
“I’ve been working there for 5 years and I make about $9/hour,” said Matt Murphy who works in the custom fabrication area. “I pay $55 a week out of pocket for healthcare, they offer 401K but after the wages and taxes I don’t have anything left to put into that.”
The issue now goes to Buffalo where a Federal judge must rule on the recognition of the desire for the workers desire for a vote be recognized.
According to Local 46 leaders Gray Metal has hired the law firm of Jackson and Lewin in New York City. Gray Metal officials declined to comment.
According to the Avon Police Chief Jim Noble, Gray Metal officials have called the police three times with complaints about the protestors.
“I know my job is on the line for speaking up,” said Murphy. “I’m doing this because I feel my brothers and sisters are being exploited by corporate greed.”
Local 46 has been set up all week in front of Gray Metal with a grill providing free lunch to the workers.
