Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty reports the arrest of a Livonia resident on a felony charge following an investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.
On May 23rd, 2023, at approximately 11:00 am, Sheriff’s Deputies responded to South Lima Road in the Town of Livonia for the report of an argument between two parties.
The investigation alleges that 66-year-old Russel H. Maurer, of Livonia, had been in the area of South Lima Road, disturbing a neighbor’s property, which started a verbal argument. During the investigation, Deputies learned that Maurer was in the vicinity of an individual’s residence, who was a protected party in an active stay away Order of Protection placed against Maurer. That Order of Protection stemmed from prior incidents between Maurer and the victim, after which Maurer was court ordered to be at least 500 feet away from the residence at all times.
Maurer was arrested and charged with felony Criminal Contempt in the First Degree, due to having three prior convictions for Criminal Contempt in the Second degree within the preceding 5 years.
Maurer was transported and turned over to Central Booking Deputies at the Livingston County Jail for processing and pre-arraignment detention. The District Attorney’s Office was contacted in regards to bail due to the felony level charge. It was recommended that Maurer be held on $3,000 cash or $6,000 bond.
Maurer was later arraigned at the Livingston County Centralized Arraignment Part (LC-CAP) at the Livingston County Jail before Justice Werth. The Judge did remand Maurer to the custody of the Sheriff, setting bail at $1,000 cash/credit or $3,000 bond.
The Livingston County Public Defender’s Office was present and represented Maurer at the court arraignment for his defense. The Livingston County District Attorney’s Office was notified but did not appear to represent the people.
