LIVINGSTON COUNTY — On Tuesday, the Livingston County Human Services Committee approved to proclaim November adoption awareness month.
According to Diane Deane, Commissioner of Social Services for Livingston County, so far this year 76 children have been supervised by foster care case workers, seven children have been adopted and five pending cases hope to be closed by the end of the year.

“People choosing to become foster parents are very special people,” said Dean. ” They are choosing to be a positive, safe resource for children who have had some kind of trauma in their lives and are no longer able to live with their parents. Children in foster care do not ask to be in the situation they are in, they are children, who don’t get to choose, who don’t have the ability to care for themselves, children who need love, and patience, and care to begin to heal from that trauma. Foster parents fill that role for the child. We are privileged and honored to work with these people. They are an invaluable resource that we need to do the important work of reunifying families.”
Deane added that we should not take for granted that families in Livingston County are incredibly generous, and we lack many of the issues that trouble other regions.
This year, Livingston County’s Department of Social Services has had 76 cases, up from 60 in 2014. Of this year’s 76 51 cases are in Department of Social Services custody and of the remaining 25, 17 are in the custody of a relative of the child, and 8 have some supervision in a different matter.
Part of the proclamation reads:
WHEREAS, this special observance reminds us that we can offer the hope of a better tomorrow to many children through adoption, and as families and communities across our County, State and Nation gather to celebrate and give thanks for our many blessings, it is the goal of all of us that every child awaiting adoption find a permanent and loving family.
