Livingston County Personnel Office Announces Civil Service Exam For Zoning Compliance Assistant.
PAY RANGE: $42,000.00 – $46,000.00 DUTIES: This work involves carrying out the administrative duties of a Town or Village zoning office. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the assigned supervisor.
Assignments may increase in complexity and responsibility as an employee increases in competence. Supervision over the work of others is not usually a responsibility of employees in this class. This position differs from the Code Enforcement Officer position which requires site inspections and enforcement of New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code.
Incumbent must be willing to attend and participate in evening meetings. A Zoning Compliance Assistant does related work as required.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must meet the following requirements to be approved to take the exam: Residency – Candidates must have been legal residents of the following jurisdiction(s) for at least four months immediately preceding the date of the written test: •

- Training/Education – Possession of an Associate’s degree from a New York State or regionally accredited college in land use, planning, natural resource management, surveying or a closely related field.
- General experience – Two years of experience in municipal, urban or regional zoning or planning.
- A higher degree is also acceptable.
- Part-time service will be given prorated credit toward experience requirements
APPLICATION PROCESS: Submit to the Livingston County Personnel Office by the application deadline: (1) A fully completed Livingston County Application for Examination or Employment and (2) The exam fee or waiver request. Applications may be obtained from the Livingston County Personnel Office or on the Personnel Department page of the Livingston County website.
EXAM SUBJECTS: The exam is comprised of a written test designed to evaluate knowledge, skills and/or abilities in the following areas. The subjects of the exam are: Zoning inspection principles, related laws and codes, and site plan interpretation – These questions test for knowledge of the concepts, terminology, and procedures used in real property and zoning inspection, including related legal documents, and for the ability to read, analyze, and perform computations based on real property and site drawings and on real property and zoning-related written presentations.
Understanding and interpreting codes and ordinances – These questions test for the ability to read and analyze various codes and requirements. Candidates will be provided with written selections related to code provisions (mainly dealing with zoning, housing and property management issues) and will be asked questions based on those reading passages. All the information needed to answer the questions will be presented in the written selections. Candidates will not be required to have any special knowledge related to the content areas covered in the reading selections. Site plan review and landscape design – These questions test for knowledge of the concepts, procedures, and materials related to property development requirements and building exterior and landscape design features, and may include questions involving sidewalks, parking, soils, and plantings, including related computations and estimates.
EXAM SCORE: Successful candidates will have their names placed on the eligible list in the order of final scores. The names of qualified candidates will remain on the eligible list for the length of the eligible list unless the candidate is appointed from the list or declines appointment from the list.
