GENESEO — Catholic Charities of Livingston County held their 6th Annual Spelling Bee at Geneseo Central School as 17 teams competed for the coveted title of’ ‘top speller’ in the valley.

It took 14 rounds for the eventual winner, Literacy Wordsmiths, comprising of Linda Canon, Susan Fernando and Sally Fox, to be crowned. The Literacy Wordsmiths were able to defeat defending champions, Penny Saver Fillies, comprised of Carole Bennett, Audrey Blount, and Janet Olexy.
The final words that separated the two teams were farouche and proscenium.
Don Alhart, from 13WHAM was the emcee of the event as Wegmans and Geneseo Kiwanis provided the spaghetti dinner.
At the conclusion of the Bee, Dom Genova from Genesee Valley Motors presented a bonus challenge to the winning team where for every Ford Model they sell that the team could name in 1 minute he would donate an additional $100. The Literacy Words its were able to name 10 models.
Catholic Charities of Livingston County is a multi-service, non-profit agency working to alleviate poverty through 10 active programs and is one of the United Way of Livingston County programs.
