LIMA – The Lima Fire Department is celebrating the 81st birthday of their former Chief, Dick Garey.
Garey joined the Fire Department in 1954 as a firefighter. He was only 18 years old, which was the minimum age to join.
“It’s gone from just a bunch of guys showing up and jumping on the fire truck to much more sophisticated equipment, to much more protective gear, to much more training and involvement,” said Garey.
On April 26, Garey will have been a Lima firefighter for 63 years. He served 4 of those years as Fire Chief and continues to be an active member.
“I’m very close to the fire house. So I get over there and get the doors unlocked and the lights on and operate the radio station for a little bit and things like that,” said Garey. “But I’m over there quite a bit during the week looking for projects around the fire house. I’m still quite involved with them.”
Garey anticipates a continuation of the legacy.
“My son will be coming back here to Lima in about a year and I can’t wait till he gets back the fire department, and the boys are old enough to join too. I’m looking forward to that,” said Garey.
A Facebook post announces Garey’s birthday and thanks him for his long service.
“We thank him for his many years of service and contributions to our community,” posted the Fire Department.
