GENESEO — The Livingston County Historical Society is hosting free practice croquet matches throughout region. Starting May 27, 2014 and continuing through mid-July, the sessions will follow a version of croquet called Backyard Croquet or Nine Wicket.
“We thought it would be a good idea to take the game of croquet on the road to Livingston County towns,” said Livingston County Museum Administrator Anna Kowalchuk. “We hope to see many of our 17 Livingston County towns represented at our Annual Livingston County Croquet Tournament .”
All are welcome to attend and croquet equipment and direction will be provided, so no previous croquet experience is necessary.
For Livingston county, croquet is rooted in history. During the 1860’s and 1870’s, the American Croquet Company of Geneseo, NY manufactured high-quality croquet sets at their factory at 5 Main Street. Indeed, in the late 1800s Geneseo was the largest manufacturer of croquet sets in the United States. Americans played casual games of croquet in their yards and the game became so popular during this era that it eventually became an Olympic sport in the 1900 and 1904 games.
