How much of the town’s water do you have to use to get money back?
In the Town of Geneseo every year large water users are reimbursed when they spend below a set quota. Although this was formed to help local businesses, some of these water users are receiving thousands of dollars a year.
Large volume water users are defined by the 2009 resolution as, “…those persons or entities that consume in excess of 2 million gallons of water per fiscal year.”
The resolution passed in 2009 builds the payment scale in as a two-tiered payment plan. For those consumers who do not consume more than 2 million gallons of water a year, a standard rate per thousand gallons is applied. For any amount over 2 million, a discounted rate is applied. The persons or entities pay the original price throughout the fiscal year, and are reimbursed the difference the following January.
Since this practice has been put into place, more than $16,000 has been reimbursed to these users. While this reimbursement does not come out of the general fund for the town, it could be used for the water district for different improvements or maintainance.
In the upcoming weeks, the Town Board will be deciding whether to continue this practice or abolish the reimbursements.
The next Town Board Meeting will be March 13th at 7:00pm in the Town of Geneseo Offices located at 4630 Millennium Drive, Geneseo, NY.
