WAYLAND — Several Wayland-Cohocton indoor track athletes will participate at the state qualifier at RIT on Friday, Feb. 26 following strong performances at the Section V championships.
The list includes juniors Jason Page and Ethyan Briggs from the men’s team. Representing the women will be seniors Madison Lewis, Meghan Curtin, Jessie Hammers and Shianne Chapman, junior Taylor Quackenbush and freshman Ashley Page.
At class C sectionals on Wednesday, Feb. 17, the women’s team took second place and was bolstered by phenomenal performances from several runners. The team finished with 67 points through 17 scored events, three points ahead of third-place Palmyra-Macedon and behind only Batavia. The men’s team failed to bring home a team honor but still had a few top-five finishes.
Meghan Curtin earned a first-place finish in the 3000-meter race with a time of 11:22:70. She also finished second in the 1000 meter (3:14:93) and fifth in the 1500 meter (5:21:06).
Madison Lewis took first place in both the 300-meter and 600-meter races with times of 41:40 and 1:39.10, respectively. She beat all competition in the 600-meter by more than five seconds. She also finished in second in the pole vault, while Emily Schwartz finished fifth.
Jessie Hammers finished sixth in the 600-meter with a time of 1:47:26. Vanessa Motzer finished fifth in the shot put (30′ 10.25″) while Cheyenne Celentano placed sixth (30′ 3.75″).
The women’s 4×400 meter relay team of Jessie Hammers, Taylor Quackenbush, Shianne Chapman and Ashley Page edged Batavia by two seconds for a first-place time of 4:15:44. The 4×800 team of Emily Schwartz, Kayla Curtin, Erin Make and Alicia Guarasci finished fifth with a time of 12:11:13.
For the men, Jason Page finished fourth in the 600-meter race with a time of 1:28:90. He also finished 12th in the 300 meter.
Michael Booth finished 9th in the 600-meter race with a time of 1:31:50. He coupled that performance with a 9th-place finish in the 300 meter.
Wayne Parsons finished 11th in the 600-meter (1:33:09).
For the shot put, Ethyan Briggs finished fourth (41′ 11.25″), Charles Coley finished sixth (39′ 1″) and Bryce Kennedy came in ninth (38′ 0″).
The 4×400 meter relay team of Jason Page, Michael Booth, Wayne Parsons and Andy Meyers finished sixth with a time of 3:51:79.
The two squads are coached by Darren Knapp and Mike Chapman.
