Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty had the sad responsibility to report that a house in Avon was on fire resulting in a loss of life. Lawrence Stevens, age 65, died after unsuccessful attempts to save him were performed by EMS workers.
On Wednesday December 30th, 2020 at approximately 8:25pm, Sheriff’s Deputies along with Fire and EMS were dispatched to a home on Lake Road for the report of a house fire. An Officer with the Avon Police Department was first on scene, followed by Deputies. One occupant of the home had exited but advised her husband was still in the basement of the home. The Deputies and the Officer attempted to enter the home but were unable to enter due to an abundance of heavy smoke.
Fire Department members were able to make entry and extricated the patient from the basement of the home. EMS immediately attempted lifesaving measures but were not successful.
The Fire Department was able to quickly put the fire out and EMS did check the female and transported her to Strong Memorial Hospital precautionary. A Deputy on scene was also checked by EMS precautionary for smoke inhalation.
The fire is under investigation by the Livingston County Fire Coordinators in conjunction with the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office. The preliminary findings are not suspicious in nature.
Members of the Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division, Criminal Investigations Division, Forensic Identification Unit and Command Staff were on scene.
The lead fire agency on scene was the East Avon Fire Department, assisted on scene by the Livonia Fire Department, the Avon Fire Department, the Caledonia Fire Department and the Lima Fire Department.
On scene for EMS was Livingston County EMS and Livonia EMS.
