HONEOYE FALLS—The planned Veterans Memorial in Honeoye Falls received a sizeable donation, Monday, thanks to the hard work of some local community members.
The group who organized the Stars and Stripes 5k run in Mendon Ponds last Veterans Day weekend donated $2,500 of the money raised to the VFW post #664 to benefit the developing veterans memorial which will be located within the village. The post was given the donation at Monday’s Village Trusties meeting.

Organized more than two years ago, the Stars and Stripes 5k run committee set out with the goal of benefiting Honor Flight, sending World War II veterans to see the WWII memorial to Washington DC. This year, with the help of major sponsors such as Isaac Heating and Air Conditioning and Tom Wahls who supplied hamburgers for the day, the group was able to double the money raised last year.
With 236 participants, the group succeeded in raising $16,000 through the run, and 30 veterans were able to benefit through Honor Flight. The group chose that the remaining proceeds would go towards the veterans memorial in Honeoye Falls.
The group is planning a third run for 2013, which is to occur again on Veterans Day weekend.
