New York approved 52 licenses for this year’s growing season, which will allow hemp farmers to start growing marijuana for the upcoming recreational marijuana market. Farmers wishing to grow the crop must get it planted in May or June of this year to be ready for harvest for the market for legal recreational use marijuana which is expected to be in place by the end of the year. Hemp, whch most of these farmers may have grown before, is a related plant to marijuana without the higher level of THC, but woul require the same kind of equipment for growing.
Farmers are limited to growing on one acre outdoors or about half that in a greenhouse. They can split their allotment between outdoors and a greenhouse.
Most of the 52 licenses went to downstate or eastern counties such as Dutchess, Schoharie and Washington Counties. However, some local upstate county farmers were issued the licenses, and they were listed as:
Erie County: Wheatfield Gardens, LLc; Yager Farms Inc.
Monroe County: Empire Agricultural Services, LLC; ROC Dispensary and Hydroponics, and Colorado’s Brand Distributing
Ontario County: Canadice Farm, LLC
Steuben County: Grateful Valley Farm. LLC
Wayne County: Honest Pharmco; Timothy Hunter
