GENESEO – A property owner’s controlled grass fire flared up into a grass fire on Long Point Road Tuesday afternoon.
Though the ground was mud, fire spread quickly through the long, dead grass. The warm weather marks the beginning of the grass fire season.
“The New York burn ban does not officially begin until March 15, but conditions are tinder dry so use caution,” said Geneseo Fire Chief Andrew Chanler.
The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) burn ban extends from March 15 from May 15.
The DEC rules are that campfires less than 3 feet in height and 4 feet in length, width or diameter are allowed as well as small cooking fires and ceremonial or celebratory bonfires, but these cannot be left unattended and must be fully extinguished.
