GENESEO — At Monday night’s Village meeting, board members discussed the possibility of allocating more money towards tourism, an increasingly lucrative local industry.
“If every town in Livingston County contributed another $500 or so to their budget, the results would likely be positive, as tourism continues to grow in the area,” said Trustee Bob Wilcox.
The extra funding would most likely go towards promotional projects such as TV ads for Livingston County’s Shop Local campaign, a program designed to make consumers more aware of the benefits and accessibility that come with supporting local businesses.
“It’s great to see the county putting forth these efforts,” said Wilcox. “Any way we can attract people to the area makes a difference.”
The board members also agreed that in terms of local tourism, weddings are the back bone of success; with an influx of couples and their out of town guests comes a drastic increase in consumer activity-especially for local hotels and Bed and Breakfasts.
Overall, the trustees seemed optimistic about the future growth of local tourism.
“If we invest in it , we’re sure to see good results and an increase in revenue in return,” said Wilcox.
