This November, due to a successful fundraising campaign by GMA, Main Street is at last ready to move forward with the lighted garland project. According to Downtown Coordinator Louise Wadsworth, the garlands will be put up by the village crew during the week of Thanksgiving, lending a special kind of charm to the Main Street throughout the Christmas season.
“This should give the Main Street district a warm, traditional Christmas feeling during the day,” said Wadsworth. “It will be even more special when the lights turn on at night.”
Wadsworth added that GMA has to date raised $5,811 and counting, enough to purchase garlands for 20 of 24 light poles. GMA itself contributed $1500, with the rest coming from generous neighbors and businesses donating in the range of $25 to $200.
Several local individuals and businesses donated $300 to “purchased a pole,” including B&D Art and Framing, Mary Kay & Charlie Nitsche, Greg O’Connell & Joe Bucci, CAS/The Big Tree Inn, High Street Properties (Rocco Dragani), Dennis Dawson, Presutti Law, Nothnagle Realtors, Mark Scoville, and Quality Office Environments.
Wadsworth added that the Village of Geneseo purchased two garlands to go across the street with a wreath in the middle and red bows, to match the ones on the poles.
Anyone can help the project further by donating to the Geneseo Merchants Association, Box 354 in Geneseo, or online at www.geneseoshops.com.
