GENESEO – The Geneseo Blue Devils won a close game against LeRoy Tuesday night in what their coach calls ‘a gritty effort.’
The final score was 2-1 Geneseo, with Kaity Keihl scoring early in the second half and Natalie Periano coming off the bench in the last ten minutes to break a tie.
“This win was big. Not because it was a divisional game or because it was a Class B school, but because the girls pulled out a win without their best stuff,” said Geneseo coach Nick Drollette. “It was a good, gritty effort.”
Coach Drollette says that the first half was pretty lackluster, but after the team talked about adjustments at halftime it immediately paid dividends when Kaity Keihl connected on a great feed from Kat Phillips.
Coach Drollette said that LeRoy scored when Geneseo made a mistake in the back that left a dangerous player onside. He especially congratulated Natalie Periano on fighting through some injuries to score the winning goal in the end.
“Natalie Peraino has been battling some nagging injuries all season and in the interest of getting her healthy I pulled her out for about 30 minutes in the second half,” said coach Drollette. “She’s a heck of a leader and really pushed to go back in. I told her I’d give her the last ten if she really felt she could go. Then all she does is go in and score the game winner with 4 minutes left. She’s a gamer, plain and simple.”
