GENESEO – The Geneseo Blue Devils defeated the Perry Yellowjackets 40 – 16.
The key to the Blue Devils’ victory was holding the Yellowjackets scoreless for 2 quarters. The score was tied 7-7 throughout the first quarter until Grace Hainsworth scored a 2 pointer, giving way to a steady lead for the rest of the game.
“They played tremendously as a team. They worked the ball together, they pushed the ball up the floor–everybody got a chance to touch the ball. It was a great team victory,” said Coach Megan Harvey, who coached the Blue Devils in the absence of Coach Curley, who had given birth to a baby boy earlier today.
In the second quarter, back-to-back points were scored by Kat Phillips and Casey Vattimo, followed by another 2 points from Victoria Finn. In the last 2 minutes of the half, Phillips scored another two times, leaving the score at 19-7.
Towards the end of the third quarter, Heidi Phelps scored another 2 pointer off of a rebound from Finn, who shortly after sank a 3-pointer to close out the quarter with a score of 29-7.
At the start of the fourth quarter, the Yellowjackets surpassed the Blue Devils’ defense to score for the first time since the start of the game. The Blue Devils responded with more baskets from Phillips, bringing the score to 37-9.
The Yellowjackets’ strong suit this game seemed to be free throws, sinking 5 free throws in the final quarter to bring the score to 37-14.
To close out the fourth quarter, the Blue Devils’ Hainsworth sank a free throw and then a 2 pointer with 30 seconds to go, followed by a 2 point shot at the buzzer by the Yellowjackets, for a final score of 40-16.
Phillips led the Blue Devils who tallied up a total of 16 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 blocks.
The win had a special significance for the Blue Devils – there regular Head Coach Meghan Curley, was absent as she gave birth to a baby boy today.
This game was Coach Harvey’s first Varsity win.
The Blue Devils hit the court again Feb. 1 at home and will host Mount Morris.
