Courtney Weimar with the 4-H Program says it is the programs’s first ever Gingerbread Project, which is intended to celebrate the holiday season and promote the 4-H program in Livingston County.
“The Gingerbread Project allows people to work together for something festive,” said a 4-H spokesperson and leader of the Gingerbread Project. “It offers a way for youth to give back to their community in a positive way this holiday season.”
Weimar added that youth and adult volunteers thoroughly enjoyed participating in this project. Members learned how to make gingerbread and frosting from scratch, while getting creative with house and decoration designs.
The community service and citizenship project began with twelve 4-H Teen Council members decorating several houses at their October meeting. More were created at the 4-H Discovery Day program on Nov. 8. Additional houses were created independently by 4-H families and donated to the project.
All of the gingerbread houses are now on display at various businesses on Main Street. The houses, which were first put on display during the Winter in the Village festival, will delight visitors and holiday shoppers until the week before Christmas.
The post-Christmas plan is for 4-H volunteers will move the houses from Main Street to Noyes Memorial Hospital, Theresa House, Vincent House, and the Livingston County Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation. Weimar says that the hope is brighten the holidays for residents there.
