GENESEO – The Main Street water and sewer main repair and replacement project has been granted a one-month extension by the Village Board of Trustees.
Dave Willard with the engineering firm MRB Group laid out the basic revised schedule for the project at the Village Board meeting on Monday.
“The way it is looking now, water main work will be done by August 21,” said Willard. “Then it’s time to test and disinfect the water, and do the service transfer and service connections to homes and businesses. Remedial excavation is set to be complete September 11, and road paving at night will start September 14. They want an extension for final completion from September 12 to September 25.”
Mayor Richard Hatheway pointed out that Sept. 25 is the beginning of parents weekend at SUNY Geneseo, and Sept. 26 is the opening day of the Hunt Races. It was agreed that the final days of the project, which involve removing cones and cleaning, will be completed before Sept. 25.
Deputy Mayor Sandra Brennan asked what the Village’s options would be if the delays appeared to be partially due to the contract.
“Language is in the contract that if the project goes over contract, the Village can seek liquidated damages,” said Bill Davis with MRB. “There are lots of reasons for this first extension. There is no sense in getting into a legal battle right away.”
Deputy Mayor Brennan added that she would like to know how the delays developed, but that it still would not have changed her decision to grant the extension.
“Just as a means of history, I’d like to see how it developed,” said Deputy Mayor Brennan, “but it wouldn’t change my vote.”
