GENESEO – On Halloween, three people currently listed as students were arrested by Geneseo Police under the recently passed ‘Social Host Law.’ The following Friday, a mass e-mail (copied below) from Wendi Kinney, Assistant Dean of Students for Fraternal Life and Off Campus Services for SUNY Geneseo, warned off campus students take reasonable precautions to keep party guests safe.
The law is designed to help protect underage drinkers from the dangers of binge drinking while holding hosts of the party legally accountable. According to Geneseo Fire Chief Andrew Chanler, from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1, their ambulance crews covered 15 EMS calls, 11 of which were intoxication or drug issues. Of those, 7 patients were transported to the hospital.
“It was unreal,” said Chief Chanler. “Our crews were out the entire night Friday and Saturday.”
Chief Chanler added that at least 2 or 3 more emergencies in Geneseo were covered by mutual aid ambulances from surrounding towns while his ambulances were all out on calls.
Chief Chanler added that by contrast, no similar calls were received the weekend of Nov. 6 to Nov. 8.
