The Green Light New York is lobbying for illegal immigrants to be able to receive a valid drivers license regardless of immigration status.
“Not a lot of immigration reform comes out of this area…[but a lot of immigration issues are] happening right here in Geneseo,” said Mary V. Rutigliano, Geneseo Village Trustee. “It would mean a lot for us to learn more about the Green Light campaign.”
According to their website there are currently 12 states that allow illegal immigrants the right to possess a legal drivers license. New York is not one of them.
Rutigliano has supported illegal immigrant rights in the past. Back in March of 2017 she was critical of Geneseo Police Officers who called Homeland Security after an illegal immigrant was accused of multiple traffic violations.
“It sounds really radical…but when you look at it, it’s just common sense legislation,” Rutigliano stated, “It’s making the roads safer. It’s lowering people’s insurances.”
At this point it’s not know what options the Village of Geneseo can offer as they continue to discuss the challenges.
