GENESEO— The Geneseo Village Board wants to make property owners and tenants more aware of what they are and are not allowed to do according to village code.
Mayor Margret Duff expressed her plans to send copies of village code regarding tenants to landlords in August.
“Whether they are students or not, it’s important for people who are renting to know what certain codes are,” said Duff. “Honestly, I didn’t know there were such things as village codes when I was in college and was renting.”
While many landlords already know what is and is not allowed by the village code, tenants, particularly college students who are new to the area may not be familiar with the code, and assume that anything not explicitly forbidden by the landlord is allowed.
In addition to sending the codes to landlords, the village board also plans to provide copies of the code to SUNY Geneseo Student Life, and the local newspapers in order to make it more accessible to students.
