GENESEO – Village police are monitoring the building and back alley of Kelly’s Saloon, which was lost in a fire last Wednesday, July 29, to check for anyone who might try to enter or gather beyond caution fences in memory of the legendary bar.
Village police say that the structure of the Kelly’s building is a hazard, and a few individuals have already been stopped from crossing hazard zones.
“We’ve been monitoring the area and sending foot patrols back there as a precaution,” said Geneseo Police Chief Osganian. “The structure is a bit of a hazard, and we don’t want anyone going inside. It’s just not safe.”
The roof and upper floors of the building collapsed above the bar as firefighters battled the flames. The entire building has been condemned and arrangements are being made for demolition. It is expected that the structure will be rebuilt from the bottom up.
Locals at first fought the blaze with a garden hose while first responders were en route.
The fire damaged Kelly’s, Honey Girl Gourmet, and two student apartments beyond repair.
Honey Girl Gourmet’s owner, Alyssa Cope, said that she will be back in business as soon as she can.
