Geneseo Fire Chief Andrew Chanler reports that they at 12:21 this afternoon the Geneseo Fire Department responded to a barn fire located at 4520 Carmichael Lane in Geneseo. A neighbor noticed smoke coming from the structure and notified the owner who was inside his residence.

The owner, neighbors and passers-by were able to move equipment and several motorcycles out of the building prior to the fire department’s arrival. When the first firefighters arrived, they found the building well involved in fire. The fire was brought under control within 20 minutes.
The building was being used as a hobby garage and shop. Both the building and its’ contents suffered heavy damages. The building and contents were insured.
The cause of the fire was determined to be an electrical malfunction associated with a meat smoker. The owner was preparing to use the smoker and turned it on approximately 20 minutes before the fire was discovered.
Firefighters from Lakeville and Livonia were called to assist at the scene. Also assisting were members of the Livingston County Emergency Management Office and the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department.
There were no reported injuries.
