GENESEO — The Geneseo Farmers Market still flourishing stronger than ever for its last day of the season.
The farmers market that started in late June has been the main attraction for college students and year-round Geneseo residents alike.
“The market operates at a lower hum until the college students come and then it explodes,” said Cate Concannon, Manager for the Geneseo Farmers Market.
The goal of the farmers market for Concannon is diversity in the vendors that regularly attend the market.
According to Concannon, the Geneseo Farmers Market has begun accepting food stamps and will continue to do so every year.
“I’m really surprised that the market is booming as much as it is on its last day,” said Janna O’Brien, Children’s Tent Coordinator. “What surprises me the most is the amount of college students that come every week, they aren’t looking for fast food, they are looking for fresh, healthy foods.”
One vendor that has been with the Geneseo Farmers Market since it was launched three years ago is Cecilia and David Deuel of Moondance Gardens.
“We have been here since day one and it gets better every year,” said Cecilia Deuel. “We have noticed that we are getting regulars that come to the market just for us.”
Moondance Gardens sells such things as tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, syrup and more and usually end up selling out come the end of the season.
“We are absolutely coming back next year, and we can only hope that next year will be as good as this year was,” said Deuel.
Richard Hatheway, Mayor for the Village of Geneseo, is a regular customer at the Geneseo Farmers Market and is sad to see that the season is over.
“I am so grateful of the community building that happens here,” said Mayor Hatheway. “It is a wonderful attraction to get more people to come downtown.”
While the season for the Geneseo Farmers Market is over, don’t fret as it will be back next season and is planned to be held on the same day, at the same time, in the same place, Thursdays from 3:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. located on Center Street.
