A Geneseo landmark restaurant, Geneseo Family Restaurant closed its doors for good Feb. 21, much to the dismay of the community that has found it a hometown staple for about 23 years.
Originally opened in February 1998 by owner Ted Tsoukalos’ parents, who came to this country from Greece in the 1960’s, the restaurant was run in later years by Ted and Kris Tsoukalos. But as Covid hit, closing and limiting the number of people able to be served, and SUNY Geneseo students were sent off campus due to the pandemic, the business was drastically affected. Not only were there far fewer customers, but even finding kitchen and wait staff was difficult.
The Main Street restaurant in the center of the village was a meeting place for many Geneseo students and community members. One Geneseo student was so moved when he read of the closing on Twitter, that he started a GoFundMe page for the owners, which collected over $7,000 by the week after the restaurant closed.
As for the owners, they have not announced future plans yet, nor are there announced plans for the restaurant building at this time.
