Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C-I, Elma) took to the floor of the New York State Senate Tuesday to renew his call for the Legislature to exercise its authority in how the state responds to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, while ensuring this is done safely.
As small businesses across the state, restaurants in particular, continue to struggle under harsh dining restrictions, Senator Gallivan urged his Senate colleagues to restore the system of checks and balances in state government, arguing that no one person, or branch of government, should have unilateral control of the state’s pandemic response.
“For 322 days, the governor has had unilateral control of the coronavirus response,” Senator Gallivan said. “His policies have resulted in thousands of layoffs, business closures and irreparable harm to many industries of the state.”
During Tuesday’s session, Senator Gallivan introduced an amendment to restore the balance of power in state government when it comes to pandemic-related policies. The Senate Majority rejected the amendment.
