NYLON – A man’s chicken barbecue to help him fight cancer ended in shock on Saturday when someone apparently stole the fundraiser’s earnings.
Tina Bush immediately started an online fundraiser GoFundMe page, accessible here, to replenish the money. The alleged thief or thieves stole over $5,000 which was intended to help Mike Walker and his wife, Caledonia native Mary Kay, as they work together to fight his stage 4 lung cancer.
“Well someone decided tonight they needed the money that was raised for Mike and his family,” posted Bush. ” It took just one rotten apple to steal this money but I want to show them and everyone else that we are fighters and we don’t give up….even on cancer!”
Generous friends, family and neighbors posted their thoughts for the family with their donations, now totaling $3,750.
“I was so sick to my stomach when I heard this, I pray they catch the ‘low’ life who took the money. My prayers to you,” posted Beverly J. Smith.
“It is sad to think that someone could stoop so low!” posted Jim and Sue Rudgers.
Friends continue to donate and comment with their sympathies.
The event was in Pavilion on Sept. 24. So far, the cash has not been returned or found.
