GENESEO – Friends of Long Point in Livingston County is locking arms with old-time collaborators and current college students, fitting local residents in classic roller skates–four wheels and all.
According to Joe Ferrero, Chairman of the Friends of Long Point in Livingston County, a roller skating event sponsored by Friends of Long Point in Livingston County and the Alpha Phi Omega fraternity chapter at SUNY Geneseo, in partnership with Be-Mar Associates, Inc. is to slide on in to the Kuhl Gym on the SUNY campus in late April.
“By bringing back this pastime to people of all ages, older folks can show off their moves while younger generations can learn how to skate on the traditional four wheels,” said Ferrero. “The ones that were really good were in their mid-50s and mid-60s, with all these fancy moves.”
The upcoming occasion grooves with this past September’s roller-skating event, which saw people of all ages and tastes glide, slip, and sashay across the Kuhl Gym floor.
While the event drew a crowd who roller-skated during the pastime’s prime in the latter half of the twentieth century, it could not have been organized without participation from prior collaborators and interested students. After a conflagration devastated Long Point Park, which lies west at the belt of Conesus Lake, its operations were suddenly stripped of a site. In sponsorship with Alpha Phi Omega, the Friends of Long Point are able to host events at the College. Be-Mar Associates, which used to supply the park with roller-skating equipment before its historic 1988 fire, will provide every attendee with wheeled platforms of the past this April.
“Events like roller-skating help bring awareness around the county that Long Point Park’s history is alive again,” said Ferrero.
The roller-skating will be in SUNY Geneseo’s Kuhl Gym on Friday, April 29 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Admission is $6.00 for adults, $5.00 for college students and everyone aged younger. A $20.00 deal for a family of four is available. Skates will be provided and contests and prizes will be available.
