GENESEO – A wayward white pigeon is the talk of Geneseo’s pet supply and lawn care superstore, having traveled halfway across the country apparently just to hang out and live large on an infinite supply of birdseed.
Countrymax employees say that the pigeon waltzed through the front door on Sunday while customers came in and out, and was only noticed when a customer pointed it out as it stood calmly at the front counter.
“A customer told one of the girls when they saw him walk right in the door,” said Kyle Mehlenbacher, an employee at Countrymax. “We caught him with a net. He was calm, and he had a band on his leg so we looked up the band numbers online. He’s 20 years old and was banded by some club in Oklahoma.”
The pigeon has been hanging around outside the store since then, keeping to itself and pecking birdseed near the store entrance, or taking walks through the nursery and garden area.
“We’ve run carts right by him and he doesn’t care,” added Mehlenbacher. “I think pigeons are only supposed to live a couple years in the wild. That’s what makes me think it was somebody’s pet that they brought here and let go.”
However he got to New York State, the pigeon appears to be here to stay. He has stayed within sight between Countrymax and Goodwill since making his first appearance on Sunday.
