LIVINGSTON COUNTY– Open minded farmers are invited to come out and hear about disease and weed management at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Bellmont Office on Monday, September 29, from 8:30a.m. to noon.
The Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Allegany and Cattaraugus Counties are teaming up with Cornell University Vegetable Program staff to host the Southern Tier Disease and Weed Management Workshop. The seminar will be led by Cornell University Extension’s new Vegetable Specialist Darcy Telenko, who holds a PhD in plant pathology and crop science.
“We want people who are not only looking to diversify an established farm, but also new farmers who are just starting out,” said Association Community Educator Colleen Cavagna. “This will give beginners a great knowledge base to start from.”
Telenko will share her insight on vegetable disease control, focusing on the main blights and diseases of crops in New York State, and give the pros and cons of both organic and conventional disease management strategies. She will also talk about common weeds in the State, their biology and how to combat them.
Participants will be encouraged to dig in and ask questions to enrich the lectures. Whenever possible, there will be hands-on demonstrations to compliment the lesson.
Cavagna added that Pesticide Recertification Credits have been applied for pending NYSDEC approval for categories 1a, 10, 21, 23, and 24.
Anyone who wants to sign up can call Colleen Cavagna at 585-268-7644, ext. 12, or email her at cc746@cornell.edu.
