Formal Honors Coming for Hero Couple’s Help in Springwater Fall

SPRINGWATER — First responders will be formally honoring a couple who rendered aid to the teen who fell down about 100 feet of small waterfalls.

According to a press release from Livingston County Sheriff Thomas Dougherty, the Sheriff’s Office is working with the Springwater Fire Department to formally thank Thomas and Shannon Frohler for possibly saving the life of Christopher Corridi, 18.

“I commend all the first responders on scene but especially the quick actions of the Froehler family,” stated Sheriff Dougherty.   “I am sure without their actions, this outcome would have been much different.  We are working with Springwater Fire Chief Rick Tripp to formally recognize the family.”

On Aug. 1 at 3:25 p.m., the Livingston County Emergency Communications Center (E-911) received a call for a teenager that fell from a waterfall in an area off of Canadice Road in the Town of Springwater. The original reports were that the fall could have been from approximately 200 feet.

Sheriff’s Deputies, along with Fire and EMS were dispatched to the scene for the rescue and investigation. Once emergency personnel were on scene, it was determined that Corridi was hiking the waterfalls with his 17 year old friend, Sam Baker.

The preliminary investigation reveals that Corridi decided to try and climb a set of waterfalls that were approximately 100 feet tall while his friend hiked a different path around the falls. At some point during Corridi’s climb, he apparently lost his footing and fell to the bottom of the falls.

Corridi lost consciousness and sustained a head wound from the fall. Fortunately for Corridi, the Froehler family was wading in the water beneath the falls. The Froehlers were able to render immediate assistance to Corridi which included calling 911 for help, controlling the bleeding and administering several rescue breaths until Corridi regained consciousness.

Members of the Springwater Fire Department were able to rope repel to the bottom of the falls and prepare Corridi for a high angle rope rescue conducted by the Ontario County Rope Rescue Team. Once the rope rescue was completed, Corridi was conscious and alert and was flown by LifeNet to Strong Hospital for treatment of his injuries. Corridi’s injuries are non-life threatening.

Responding personnel from the Sheriff’s Office included members of the Road Patrol Division, the Criminal Investigations Division, the Forensic Identification Unit and Command Staff members.   Responding Fire and EMS Units were Springwater Fire Department, Wayland Fire Department, LifeNet, Livonia EMS, Livingston County EMS, and the Ontario County Rope Rescue Team which consisted of members from the Honeoye, Naples, and Richmond Fire Departments.
