CALEDONIA — After starting the season 4-0, The Cal-Mum Red Raiders suffered their second consecutive defeat, losing 22-12 to the Perry Yellowjackets at home.
The Red Raiders struck first, taking a 6-0 lead, but the Yellowjackets would even the score at 3:03 mark of the second quarter and force a 6-6 tie at halftime. The second half would prove to be all Yellowjackets, as they would extend their lead to 22-6 near the end of the third quarter. The Red Raiders would get a late rushing touchdown, but it was not enough to overcome Perry’s dominant third quarter.
Cal-Mum head coach John Walther felt his team had too many miscues.
“We did some things well, but we made too many mistakes against a good team,” Walther said. “You’re not going to able to win football games doing that against a good football team, like Perry is.”
Walther said his team is already trying to put this game behind them and look ahead to their next game.
“We’ve just got to look forward to next week,” Walther said. “For us, it’s the biggest week of the season, regardless. It’s going to dictate if we’re going to sectionals, or not, so it’s a do-or-die week for us.”
Perry was paced by a strong offensive performance from quarterback Cory Dillon, who had two passing touchdowns and one rushing touchdown.
Cal-Mum (4-2) will travel to Leroy next Friday and play at 7:30. Perry (5-1) will head back home and host Warsaw on Friday at 7:30.
