LIVONIA—This year is the fifth annual Little Lakes Triathlon, taking place Sunday, May 19 at Livonia Central School. The triathlon is open to students grades 3-8 in Livingston County and the surrounding areas. This event is to raise awareness about childhood obesity and to promote a healthier lifestyle for kids.
“There are a lot of kids who do not play sports because they are not good at them,” said Terry McCarron, a representative for the Little Lakes Youth Triathlon committee. “This gives those kids something they can do and be proud of.”
Eighteen percent of American children are overweight. The goal of the Little Lakes Youth Triathlon is to encourage children to engage in physical activity for a healthier future. The triathlon consists of age-appropriate swimming, biking and running.
“It is a really fun event, there isn’t a lot of pressure on the kids,” McCarron said. “If they don’t finish, it is OK. They accomplished something new.”
This event will motivate youths to be involved in a more active lifestyle, preventing childhood obesity. Last year, this event was a huge success, with more than 200 participants from 20 schools.
The entry fee for each child is $15, which includes a free T-shirt for completing the triathlon.
“It boosts their confidence, builds their self-esteem and creates a healthier lifestyle,” said McCarron , commenting on the importance of this event.
The event is run professionally. Each child will get to experience how a real triathlon would feel. They get body markings, numbers and computer chips on their ankles. Their scores are posted as well.
