LIVINGSTON COUNTY– The mastermind of a brutal armed robbery against a 70-year-old victim in Springwater was sentenced to State prison Thursday morning, despite his continued denial that he was involved with the crime.

Alan Fick, 36, was sentenced to 24 to 26 years in State prison for having contacted Joseph Machado, 23, and Kyle Witthoft, 21, from out of town and inviting them to break into Barrett’s house, hold him at gunpoint, and steal his shotgun, credit cards, and 2005 Dodge Dakota, while Fick kept lookout outside. It was made clear in court that the victim is only alive today because he was able to free himself after the robbers had left, and drove his lawnmower to a neighbor’s house.

“You were the only one with information about the victim’s house and situation,” said Judge Dennis Cohen. “The others were not from the area. Based on what was heard at your trial, it seems clear that you were aware of what was happening in that house.”
Despite his denial of the charges, Fick was able to lead investigators to the spot in the Erie Canal where the victim’s truck was submerged.
Fick has expressed contempt for his two accomplices, who implicated him under questioning. According to Livingston County District Attorney Greg McCaffrey, Fick said at a previous court hearing, “I’m only here because a man took a plea deal to tell a f****** story.”
Fick will be remanded to a State prison and will pay more than $1300 to Barrett for his losses.
