American Heart Month
Heart disease is the #1 cause of death in this country. Over 610,000 (one in four) people die of heart disease in the United States each year. Taking steps to prevent and control heart disease can greatly reduce your risk.
To prevent heart disease, there are four simple things you can do:
1. Eat healthy. Eat foods that are high in fiber, but low in trans fat, saturated fat, and sodium. Eat at least five fruits and vegetables everyday.
2. Exercise regularly. Try to stay active for at least 30-60 minutes a day. Staying active does not mean you have to have an intense workout everyday; it just means to keep moving.
3. See your doctor regularly. Regular doctor’s visits can help recognize warning signs
4. Don’t smoke. If you do smoke, quit. Cigarette smoking greatly increases your risk for heart disease. Talk with your healthcare provider or visit the NYS Smokers Quitline at www.nysmokefree.com.
Your heart is the most important muscle in your body. Keep it healthy and fit for a long and productive life. For more information regarding heart health please contact the Livingston County Department of Health at 585-243-7299 or visit our website http://www.livingstoncounty.us/doh
