A fatal accident at the “Cuylerville Curve” near Canandaigua St. in Leicester occurred on Tuesday, Oct. 27, as an SUV went off the road and into a building that was engulfed in flames as a result.
The accident occurred about 7 a.m. Bill Baierschmitt, who lives nearby and was out walking his dog, ran to the location when he heard the impact, and tried to help the driver. The back window of the SUV was broken, the building on fire, and he yelled to the driver, who did not respond. Baierschmitt said he could not tell if the lone male driver was alive or dead, but the flames and heat of the engulfed building kept him from being able to help. Fire crews also made an attempt to extricate the driver, but were unsuccessful, due to the burning building.
The fire was mostly under control two hours later, but the road was closed by sheriff’s investigators while they investigated what may have happened.
There was extensive damage to the building which also housed two businesses, Twisted Stitches and Mooney’s Two Scoops. No one was in the building when it was hit.
|As of Wednesday morning, the driver remained unidentified. ccording to Livingston County Sheriff Thomas Dougherty, “Due to the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office inability to positively identify the deceased today, the name will not be released. They have not provided a time for the dental comparison to be done but we will advise when such is complete.”|
