GENESEO — A new five mile walking trail was proposed at the Geneseo Village Board meeting Monday.
Included in the proposal are two new crosswalks, one crossing Avon Road near Geneseo Central high school and the other crossing Court Street. The community loop trail encompasses the Village of Geneseo, and is intended for foot traffic only and not bicycles.
“A large portion of the trail is on sidewalks, so we don’t really want bicycles on the trail,” said Kurt Clyke, a member of the Association for the Preservation of Geneseo (APOG) whom spoke to the Village Board. “We are hoping the trail is open with signage and benches by September for when students come back for school.”
The trail would be closed during hunting season for safety issues.
Genesee Valley Conservancy, APOG and the College all working together on the project.
“This is exciting,” said Geneseo Mayor Margaret Duff, “Walkability in the community is on everyone’s agenda, this is perfect.”
