Emergency Donations to Catholic Charities Thaw Frigid Week for the Homeless

LIVINGSTON COUNTY – An outpouring of warmhearted donations by Livingston County residents is replenishing Catholic Charities’ stores of winter clothing in a big way.

When this week’s single-digit windchills completely depleted stores of winter clothes for Catholic Charities of Livingston County, the organization put out an emergency Facebook post asking for hats, gloves, coats, sweatshirts, and scarves, and the response was incredible.

“We must have seen four homeless individuals on Tuesday, and by the end of the day we were out of everything,” said Tabitha Brewster, Executive Director of Catholic Charities of Livingston County. “People came in, dropped things off, and called in to schedule pickups. At 11:30 this morning a homeless family walked in, and left with the warm clothes they needed.”

Within hours of Catholic Charities reaching out, more than a dozen donors came to their facilities to give winter clothes.

Brewster said that the cold weather always brings people in need to Catholic Charities seeking relief from winter.

“We see homeless individuals year-round but especially when it gets really cold,” said Brewster. “It’s too much to tell someone to go back out to 7-degree weather because we have nothing for them.”
