EMAIL TO THE EDITOR: Rep. Collins is Duty Bound to Hold Town Hall

The following is an email submitted by Anne Roth-Blizzard to the GeneseeSun.com for publication. The attitudes and ideas expressed below should not be interpreted as the opinion of the GeneseeSun.com.

Dear Editor,

Sun Market

Our duly elected “representative” Chris Collins is stating that he will “never hold a Town Hall Meeting” because “what you get are demonstrators who come and shout you down and heckle you. They are not what you would hope they would be.” Collins is not basing his fears on personal experience. He has never held anything resembling a Town Hall meeting with constituents.

As our elected “representative” Mr. Collins has a duty to listen to and interact with his constituents beyond his occasional one sided form letters. He works for us. Perhaps such a forum would NOT be “what he would hope it would be” but is being a public servant about having everything go one’s way? Could Mr. Collins perhaps respect his constituents enough to understand that they have serious concerns about how their health care bills will be covered if the Affordable Care Act is gutted by his party? How farms will continue to run if their migrant workers are deported by “reforms” enacted by his party? Whether Medicare and Social Security will be available, and in what specific forms, in a few years? How they will be able to care for their disabled family member if Medicaid is cut by his party? How the Northern Access Project gas pipeline expansion will affect the health and safety of those who live in Western NY? Could Mr. Collins perhaps make an effort to find common ground with those with whom he disagrees rather than vilify them? Could he take the time to explore some of the reasons why so many of his constituents want so badly to talk with him and make an effort to find a way?? His continued distancing and “me vs. them” mentality serves no one.

Respectfully submitted,

Anne Roth-Blizzard
