The collective groan of disappointment could be heard throughout New York State as both suffering businesses and consumers learned that gyms, movie theaters and malls will not be allowed to reopen in the coming phase four allowances.
This is just another COVID-19 inspired decree that early on saw the State deny your right to Freedom of Religion and Freedom of Assembly but not your right to buy your bottle of alcohol from a liquor store.
The latest collective groan came when NYS’s Budget Director, Robert F. Mujica Jr., proclaimed Governor Cuomo’s decision through a conference call yesterday for local leaders.
The owners of these establishments had their hopes of life saving revenue dashed upon the rocks of more constricting regulations.
Other businesses with large customer visitations like Walmart, Wegmans, Home Depot, and Lowes all have been opened as “essential” businesses and managed to control foot traffic, keep contact surfaces clean and prevent crowding.
Why could not those same rules also apply to their dying businesses, they collectively asked? That question appears to have been ignored by a deaf-eared State government.
