DWC headed to Brockport Saturday, 2/11/23, to have four wrestlers compete for their chance at qualifying for the State Tournament. Each wrestler has to finish at least 3rd to make it to the state tournament. Out of the 4, 2 would place. Elijah Bender would lose a few close matches winning his finals game by pin to take 5th at 215lbs. 7th grader Wyatt Sartori would battle giants all day, making it to actual finals losing by fall to Cael Stewart of Canisteo to take 2nd and punch his ticket to the state tournament at 102lbs.
This would end the season for the team, with only Wyatt advancing. DWC made a lot of noise this season, finishing top of LCAA and top 5 in the Section. It was a year to remember from 7th Grader Wyatt Sartoris’s domination to this young team finishing 17-7 and showing everyone who they are. Could you make sure to tune in and support DWC and Wyatt Sartori at the state tournament in Albany on February 24th and 25th?
Coach Walker added:
“Wow, what a season it has been! The uncertainty from the beginning of the season to right now has been one wild ride. This team has shown us coaches over and over what resilience and courage are! A young, hungry team that’s underestimated is dangerous and that’s just who we are. They conquered mountains this year and set a great foundation for the future. Today we brought five guys(which has been done quite a while ago) , two of which were under 9th grade. I mean, Peter Thompsons 138lb class was just stacked beyond belief all season yet thus 8th grade crushed it. Our Jr captain and 215lber Elijah Bender bloomed beyond words winning counties, then qualifying for supers, and nearly missing states after never placing in either tournaments prior. Then there is Wyatt Sartor. The 7th Grade beast. This kid gave up at least 8-10lbs to his opponents all year as well as half a foot in height to most. But that never bothered him, in fact it made him hungrier i think. The speed we have gained as a team will only increase. I’m so proud of my men! Back to work! We coming for you States!”
Wrestler of the meet goes to 7th Grader Wyatt Sartori for his shear determination and grit! You the man!
