INTERSTATE 390: Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty reports the arrest of a Town of Sparta resident on drug related charges after a traffic stop. On December 15, 2018 Deputy Shawn Whitford was assigned to the Sheriff’s Office Operation Safe Interstate initiative when he stopped a vehicle on the Interstate 390 for a violation of the NYS Vehicle and Traffic Law.
The operator of the vehicle was identified as 41 year old Christina M. Beechler. The Deputy Sheriff suspected that Beechler was operating the vehicle under the influence of drugs and requested Deputy Michael Phillips of the Sheriff’s Office STOP DWI Unit to respond to the scene to conduct a DWAI drug investigation. The investigating Deputies also found that Beechler was in possession of marijuana along with smoking devices. At the conclusion of the roadside investigation, Beechler was taken into custody for DWAI.
Beechler was then transported to the Sheriff’s Office Headquarters in Geneseo where Deputy Matthew Thomas, who is a certified Drug Recognition Expert (DRE), conducted an evaluation on Beechler. It was the Deputy Sheriff’s expert opinion that Beechler was under the influence of a narcotic analgesic, a central nervous system depressant, and cannabis and that she could not operate a vehicle safely. Beechler did also provide a urine sample that will be sent to the lab for analysis.
Beechler was arrested and charged with Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs, Driving While Ability Impaired by a Combination of Drugs, and Unlawful Possession of Marijuana. Beechler was turned over to Central Booking Deputies at the Livingston County Jail for
processing. Beechler was issued appearance tickets and will answer to the charges in the Town of Avon Court at a later date.
Also assisting with the investigation was Deputy Matthew Moran of the Patrol Division and Deputy Vittoria DiNitto of the Jail Division.
