Deer Run Winery Aging to Perfection with Vintage Rebrand

GENESEO – As Deer Run Winery continues to grow onward and upward, they have incorporated the rich history of Geneseo, Conesus Lake, and the Genesee Valley into their new labels for their lifestyle (blended) wines and premium wines, grown and produced in the town of Geneseo.

Owners George and Joan Kuyon say that due to the help and generosity of the Livonia Historical Museum and National Warplane Museum, they were able to see hundreds of vintage pictures, including images of the iconic ice harvest on Conesus Lake, Whiskey-7, and 100-year-old images from around the lake, and incorporate them into their new wine labels.

“We have quite a bit of wine to sell featuring the older labels, so you will find a mix of the old and new labels in our tasting room until the previous inventory sells out,” said Marie Kuyon, event coordinator at Deer Run Winery. “We invite customers to stop in for a free wine tasting and welcome the opportunity to show off the new labels and share the stories that go along with them. Livingston County has a rich history and we hope that the new labels convey a portion of that history.”

For example, the label on their most award winning wine, Runway Red, boasts a photo of Whiskey-7, one of the few surviving Douglass C-47’s that dropped allied paratroopers into Normandy on June 6, 1944, currently in the care of the Warplane Museum in Geneseo. Max Black, their best-selling table wine, shows a turn-of-the-century picture of a dock on Conesus Lake.

All labels on premium wines, which include mostly vintage wines, now showcase a photo of the Prohibition Era ‘fruit press’ which has been handed down through three generations within the family. It was used by the owner’s grandfather to make wine in his basement during Prohibition. The press can be seen in the tasting room at the winery.

“We’ve been growing ever since my dad decided to set up this place after making wine in his basement as a hobby for years,” said  Scott Kuyon at the winery. “We looked at our old labels, thought it was time to do something different as we continue to increase production. We talked to Rich Carrerro after his Destination Downtown presentation, and he worked with us on a bunch of ideas. We hope these photos tell the stories behind the wines.”

The winery, at 3772 W Lake Road, Geneseo, has continued to grow since its small beginnings in 2003. Besides being the only winery in Geneseo, they feature a full gift shop and continue to become more popular as a host for weddings, special events, and their summer concerts.
