Deer Run Runs Away With Multiple Medals at the Two Wine Competitions

GENESEO — Deer Run Winery has announced the most recent medal winning wines from the final two competitions of 2018.

In the 2018 New York Wine Classic, Deer Run received silver medals for their Via Ferrata and Runway Red wines, and bronze medals for their 2017 Riesling, 2017 Aromella and Attraversare. In the 2018 Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition, Deer Run won two gold medals for their Dockside and Runway Red. They also won a bronze medal for their 2017 Dry Riesling.

Scott Kuyon, General Manager of Deer Run, says that while competitions like these help with marketing, they serve a more important purpose in his mind.

“It’s a measure of how well we are doing in our wine making process compared to our peers in the finger lakes and how we are getting better each year,” Kuyon said.

Kuyon is particularly proud of how Deer Run’s Runway Red performed this year.

“Runway Red has always been a bride’s maid but never a bride, but now it has a gold medal for best wine in it’s category, “Kuyon said. “I’m very proud to have one of our best selling wines win such high honors.”

While Kuyon has high hopes for Deer Run’s traditional wines, he says that the one he enjoys making the most is the fortified wine, Dockside. According to Kuyon, Dockside started as an experiment and has grown into a success.

“Dockside is a fun fortified wine to make, and it doesn’t follow traditional norms,” Kuyon said. “I age it in bourbon barrels, and next year’s vintage will be aged in barrels from Black Button [Distillery].”

Currently, Deer Run is working on two new wines, both of witch will be aged for two years. the first is a single vineyard reserve noiret, and the second is a cabernet franc, which Kuyon says, “will be the highest quality red wine we have ever put in a bottle.”
