NYLON — The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has announced dates and locations for the annual sampling of the Finger Lakes’ rainbow trout.
According to a press release from the DEC, rainbow trout samplings will take place on March 24 at 9 a.m. in Naples Creek in the Village of Naples and Friday, March 25 at 10 a.m. at Cold Brook (Keuka Inlet) in the hamlet of Pleasant Valley.
“These samplings are a sort of rite of spring for many interested in fishing and wildlife,” says Linda Vera, contact for the DEC. “People really love to come out and witness this sort of thing.”
Sampling the fish allows the DEC to forecast how the fishing will be later in the year.
The sampling is also conducted to aid in the ongoing assessment of Finger Lakes fisheries management practices. Data on the length, weight, sex, and spawning condition of each fish sampled will be gathered and later available to the public towards the April 1 opening of the “inland” trout fishing season.
