AVON — On Wednesday night, the Avon Community Playground Committee was presented a check from the family of David Greer, from the charity foundation made in his honor.
David Greer, who passed away in May 2011. The money is from the David Greer Donation Fund, which began in 2011 after the 17-year-old passed.
“This is very fitting because David spent a lot of time at the park,” said Bill Wall, David’s Grandfather. “This is a way to give back to the community after everything they did to help us out.”
The room was filled with David’s friends and family as the check was presented to the committee. Bill Wall expressed the donation as a “family idea,” fondly remembering the time when he and his grandson worked on the nature walk also located in Avon Downs. Greer’s grandmother, Jill Wall, also expressed her satisfaction with the allocation of the funds. When referencing the Avon Downs, she noted that David “loved it down there. It’s what he would want.”
“This is what David would want,” said Trish Greer, David’s mother. “The kids have worked so hard to raise this money. This was the right thing to do.” Trish Greer is pleased that she can give back to the community that had been so generous to her and her family during difficult times.
The $3,400 is helping the Avon Community Playground Committee reach its goal of $80,000 to build a new playground by Summer 2014. The Committee currently has $65,000, and therefore have 80% of what they need to begin work on the playground. Chair of the Committee John Marks is pleased with the outcome thus far, and the involvement of “every sector of the community” in making this playground possible.
Avon Community Playground Mission Statement:
The Avon Community Playground Committee was created to support the development of the children of this community in a healthy, natural environment through unstructured play. We act on behalf of the children to aid their physical development, their cognitive, intellectual and social growth as well. In addition, we promote an enthusiasm for nature.
The Community is invited to attend the next fundraiser, this Saturday night at the Avon Inn where Bob’s Brother’s will be performing.
