In a post on the Dansville Fire Department Facebook page, it was noted on March 18 that Dansville’s famous “Castle On the Hill”, the former Bernarr McFadden Sanitorium, is on fire. The fire was called in on Friday night.

The structure has been deemed unsafe for years, and so it has been decided that entering the building to fight the fire in the upper floors is unsafe. The fire is suspicious in nature, since there is no longer electric in the building.
The public service announcement on the Facebook page Saturday morning reads:
PSA from The Dansville Fire Department: The Castle on the Hill is currently on fire in the upper south floors. The Dansville PD, Dansville Fire Dept, Sheriff’s Office and the Office of Emergency Management are aware and still investigating as it is obviously suspicious in nature. The fire will be monitored and checked on periodically as conditions are unsafe to enter the building to suppress the fire and fire trucks cannot access the area. Please do not call 911 to report this situation.
